Cost of Studying In Germany

Undergraduate Programs

Public universities in Germany usually do not charge tuition fees for undergraduate programs, except for a small semester contribution of €200–€500 EUR per semester. Private universities may charge between €5,000 and €10,000 EUR per year.

Postgraduate Programs

For master’s programs at public universities, tuition is often free or very low, with students paying only the semester contribution. However, some specialized master’s or private institutions may charge €5,000–€15,000 EUR per year.

 

Types of VISA

  • International students need a German Student Visa (National Visa, Type D) to study in Germany. This visa is valid for long-term studies and must be converted into a residence permit after arrival in Germany.

Blocked Account Requirements

To get a student visa, students must show proof of financial means by opening a Blocked Account. For 2025, the required amount is approximately €11,904 EUR (about €992 EUR per month) to cover living expenses for one year. This amount must be deposited before applying for the visa.
